Diaper Care

Diaper Pail You can use just about any type of bucket for a diaper pail. You can buy a trashcan with a flip open lid, you can buy a five gallon bucket, or find some type of container in your house. When the diaper is only soiled with pee, just shake the insert into the pail and then drop the diaper in there. When the diaper has been soiled with poop, you can shake the poop off into the toilet or if you have a diaper sprayer you can rinse the diaper off in the toilet with the diaper sprayer. If a diaper is especially dirtied with poop (even after shaking it off in the toilet and/or using a diaper sprayer) you can run it through a cold rinse cycle in the washing machine to help get more out of it and prevent stains from setting. Just put the wet diaper in the diaper pail when it’s done with the cold rinse cycle. Babies who are exclusively nursed will not need to have their diapers rinsed off prior to washing. Also, the diapers do not need to be soaking in any type of solution in the pail.

Washing
It is very easy to wash your cloth diapers. Depending on the amount of diapers you have you may wash every day to three days. When wash day has come, simply put all your diapers in the washing machine and run it through a COLD cycle first. This cold cycle will help to wash off any loose matter (poop) on the diapers. The cold cycle also helps to break up any stains before the hot water, as the hot water will only set the stains further. After the cold cycle, wash your diapers on a hot wash cycle with a ¼ cup of the recommended amount of detergent*. You do NOT need much soap in the wash as it will eventually build up a residue on the diapers and cause them to repel and the inserts to not absorb as well as they should. I personally end my diapers with an extra rinse cycle to make sure all the soap has been thoroughly rinsed out of the diapers.

Drying
You can either line dry or use the dryer for your diapers. The maker of GADs recommends drying the diapers on a hot dry cycle in the dryer. This is good to rejuvenate the fibers in the polyurethane laminate (PUL) of the pocket diapers. Line drying in the sun will eventually lead to the breaking down of the elastic. If you do use the dryer, it is important that you wait for the diapers to cool off before stuffing them with inserts, as stuffing them while the diapers are still hot can be damaging to the elastic.

Removing Stains
Do not use bleach or other stain remover products when washing your diapers. These products will result in a shorter life span of the diapers because the chemicals are hard on the PUL and other materials. Sunning the diapers from time to time will help remove stains. Simply lay the diapers out in the sun for awhile and the sun will aid in naturally bleaching out the stains. Another option is to sun the diapers and spray them occasionally with all natural one part lemon juice one part water. Not only will this help rid the diapers of stains but your diapers will smell lemony fresh!

Prepping your Hemp inserts before use:
Hemp needs to be primed before it can reach its maximum absorbency. You can prime your hemp by washing it in hot water and drying it about 10 times or you can boil it. The hemp insert can be used before it's been primed, but remember that it may not hold as much liquid as your other inserts. After it's been washed about 10 times it should be fully primed and will work just as well as your other inserts.
